Dinner at Zees Grill in the Shaw Club Hotel in Niagara on the Lake was smashing the first night, not as good the second night.
They have a wonderful patio/veranda and the flowering trees smell wonderful.
Amuse bouche of beef carpaccio which I passed on, and bread w/ a delicious salted butter in soybean oil:
Compressed Watermelon & Strawberry Salad w/ Baby Arugula, Toasted Almonds, Best Baa Feta, Baco Noir Balsamic Reduction & Lemon Vinaigrette — excellent!
Pan Seared Lightly Smoked Atlantic Salmon Filet w/ Orange Scented Organic Quinoa, Vegetables, Orange & Tarragon Salad, Canadian Cedar Jelly — also excellent! Fresh and healthy.
For Dessert I chose the Chocolate — Dark Chocolate Custard, Strawberry & Balsamic Compote, Peppermint Cream. This was basically like a chocolate creme brulee without the brulee. It came in a very large dish. It was too dark to see it or take a picture.
Service was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. I heard people at another table talking to another table about how amazing the steak was, like a 20 out of 10.
The second night’s dinner: This time I asked for more of the delicious butter and soybean oil.
I wanted to try something different than the night before. In hindsight, I should have just gotten the same thing as last night.
Nova Scotia Lobster Poutine: House Cut Fries, Butter Poached Lobster, White Cheddar Cheese Curds, Red Wine Veal Jus Reduction, Lemon Herb Hollandaise Sauce
I love lobster, and after reading many rave reviews of this dish, it was a bit disappointing to only get a tiny bit of lobster (I didn’t know it would just be the claws) over a massive plate of fries. I also wish the cheese would be melted. I asked for Hollandaise on the side and it did not come at all.
Pan Seared East Coast Scallops (hold the Smoked Pork Belly) w/ Pan Roasted Grapes, Charred Cauliflower, Crisp Apple and Sultana Salad, Confit Lemon, and Fermented Black Garlic Puree. I asked to hold the pork belly and right away the server said something like, well you can’t substitute anything for it. Ummm, I didn’t ask to make a substitution, but okay. The scallops were nice, but the garlic was too overpowering for me to enjoy this dish.I didn’t like the lemons either.
Service was slow, and just not as nice as the first night.
Breakfast was also fantastic the first time and a let-down the second time.
COLD SMOKED SALMON & AVOCADO BENEDICT –2 Poached Free Run Eggs, Avocado Puree & Cold Smoked Salmon,English Muffin, Rosti Potato & Hollandaise Sauce on the side — fabulous! This is totally like something I would make at home, except much more refined. I would definitely order this again.
The second morning I wanted to try something different and tried to go healthy. Another regrettable decision.
